“English 460: Writing for Nonprofits” was an exciting adventure! In this course, students at USCB partnered with a local nonprofit, determined what the organizations’s writing needs were, and created documents that met those needs. Along the way, students learned to analyze and create unfamiliar genres using rhetorical tools and theories. We were interrupted by the arrival of Hurricane Matthew on SC’s shores, but the course offered students an opportunity to see how writing skills and critical analysis are used in professional settings, and to have the experience of writing for real-world audiences. After the hurricane, students also saw in new (and unexpected) ways how much writing can make a difference for the organizations that make our community a better place to live and work.
